Finance Committee

In order to achieve our aims, effective financial scrutiny is essential. Whilst the Boards of NUS have decision-making powers in relation to Finance, the Finance Committee provide structures, governance and technical input according to the Board’s decisions. The purpose of the committee is to provide good governance and oversight to the group’s finance strategy, performance and activities as well as ensuring that there are effective internal financial controls and processes. 

The Finance Committee:

  • Monitors the budget setting and reforecasting process together with the ongoing performance reporting against the budget set. 
  • Ensures that the annual financial statements and accounts are prepared correctly and using the appropriate processes including with external auditors.
  • Ensures the presence of an appropriate reserves policy and supervises the NUS’s assets and investments
  • Reviews any strategies that have finance implications including business plans and advises the boards and management of appropriate courses of action where appropriate.

Membership

Membership of the Finance Committee is drawn from members of the NUS Joint Boards as well as up to four additional members to provide specific expertise.

Daryl Ormerod is the chief executive of the University of Sheffield Students' Union.

Emilie Tapping

Emilie is currently CEO of Brookes Union, and a mem400242ber of the NUS Finance Committee. Emilie is experienced in HE, having worked at KCLSU, King's College London, Arts SU and LSESU and has completed an MSc in Charity Finance & Accounting at Bayes Business School. Emilie is also a trustee and company secretary for Arts Emergency.

 
Finance Committee External Member Jag Babbra
 

Jag joins the finance committee as an external volunteer. Jag is a chartered accountant and currently works in investment banking as a finance manager. Previous to banking, Jag worked in an accountancy practise as an audit senior.

Finance Committee External Member Jack Stapleton
 

Jack volunteers as an external member of the finance committee, joining from 2022. He has spent 10 years working at KPMG LLP, spending the first seven years of his career as a financial statements auditor before shifting his focus to governance, risk and compliance.  Throughout this time he has worked with further and higher education institutions across the sector.  Jack studied Modern Languages from Nottingham University and worked in France and Spain prior to his career at KPMG.
