Following the ban on plastic straws, cotton buds and drink stirrers in 2020, a single-use plastic ban, coming in to force on 1 October, will mean businesses in England can no longer supply, sell or offer single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers.
The ban also includes EPS (expanded polystyrene) products. Full details about the ban can be found on the gov.uk website and Bidfood has published lots of useful information on their website.
If you have not already started to prepare your operation for the new rules, here are some key recommendations:
• using up existing stock before 1 October
• looking at re-usable alternatives to single-use items
• using different materials for single-use items
The catering non-consumables category now has five suppliers you can choose from who all offer a range of alternatives to ensure you are fully compliant with the new legislation. This is a compulsory category with plenty of supplier choice. We'll also be sharing some of the listed alternatives and their eco-benefits over the coming weeks so please watch this space!
The five suppliers are : InnerGlass, Alliance, Nisbets, Sylvester Keale and Northern Catering.
