Organisational Change and Restructuring

Organisational change can happen for a variety of reasons, and can be driven by a number of contexts.  For some organisations change can feel like a continuous, ongoing process.  In contrast, for many organisations, the Covid-19 pandemic has created an extreme combination of rapid disruption and a need to respond and change at pace. 

Managing change effectively is an important yet challenging activity which incorporates leadership; project / programme planning and management, communication, giving staff a voice through the process, acknowledging emotions of staff, awareness of cultutral issues and building and maintaining trust of staff, etc. It may also include activities such as organisational and role redesign, TUPE transfers*, restructuring**, redundancy and redeployment, technological, system and process change etc. 

*TUPE refers to the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 as amended by the Collective Redundancies and Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) (Amendment) Regulations 2014.  When a service provided by a Students Union moves to a new organisation, (or when a service from another organisation transfers into the SU) the employees may be protected under TUPE, in which case the employees transfer with the service.  For NCVO's guidance on TUPE, visit

**Restructuring is a term to describe the process of changing an organisational structure to work for its evolving or future needs.  It can be planned and proactive as part of a broader strategy (e.g. of expansion, diversification etc), or reactive, or unplanned in response to external factors such as the pandemic, recession,changes to customer demand etc.  Restructuring can affect the whole of an organisation, or smaller parts.
