Pastoral care

Students’ unions often do work on influencing the pastoral care within their institutions to ensure that they are fit for purpose and able to support students in staying on course. Pastoral care can include services as diverse as:

  • Disability support
  • Counselling and mental health support
  • Advice
  • Accommodation services
  • Chaplaincy

There are resources which will be useful in influencing each of these areas in the respective sections, but you might particularly find the Time to Change toolkit useful if you are trying to influence the way that student mental health is supported on your campus.

To find out more about pastoral care and student services, you might find the AMOSSHE website useful – AMOSSHE are the student services organisation and represent student services staff in HE.

The equivalent organisation in FE is NAMSS, the National Association for Managers of Student Services.
