Not enough is currently known about the experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in education in Scotland. We do not have figures for how many asylum seekers and refugees are in tertiary education and we do not have an accurate picture of what support they receive. NUS Scotland plans to conduct research so that we have this data and can use it to feed into our future work.

We are also representing the interests of students on New Scots Education Group that is looking at the issues faced by asylum seekers and refugees trying to access and stay in education. As part of this work we’re working on a paper identifying barriers to education for asylum seekers and refugees that can hopefully be used as a resource in future.
